Diversity in the IT domain can be heard to quantify. It is not simply about having more people from different backgrounds in your team. Many aspects of IT design carry over colonialist practices that enforce homogenized perspectives. This can result in a situation where professionals from non-white non-male backgrounds are told to “first assimilate, and then generate difference” (Dori Tunstall). Genuine diversity includes embracing other ways of knowing and doing.
